TOMMASO VALOTTA The second angel in this section is Tommaso Valotta, born the 4-8-1935; second child of Rizzuti Giuseppina and Valotta Tommaso. He presently resides in Toronto. Tommaso left Capistrano in 1953 or 1954, to work in Grosseto, Tuscany. Afterwards, he moved to France and lastly to Switzerland. In 1936 he married Antonietta San Marco, another very appreciated Capistrano lady. In 1964 he left Switzerland to join his wife in Canada. With Antonietta they had four children: Rocco, Giuseppina, Albina and Francesco. When the uncle of his wife, Vito Montesano, who also resided in Toronto, became ill, Tommaso and Antonietta started looking after him and his old wife. Sadly, in 1997 his wife Antonietta lost her life. Tommaso became a widower at the age of 62. After the uncle died, the wife’s aunt lived alone. Tommaso and his family made sure that she would be visited daily. Not long after her husband’s death, the aunt also became ill and, when needed, Tommaso would bring her to the hospital, staying with her at times all night, in spite of the fact that he had to go to work early the next morning. At the same time, Tommaso’s mother in law, Elvira, who was in her nineties, started weakening as well. To make sure that the old mother in law would not be left alone during the day, Tommaso would pay a woman to stay with her four hours a day. For years, Tommaso continued to take care of his wife’s aunt and his wife’s mother, not an easy task, given their late age. Because of the two old women’s deteriorating health, Tommaso had to finally place both in a nursing home. Even then, Tommaso would visit the two women daily with the same lady that would look after the aunt four hours a day. He would feed his mother in law while the woman would feed his aunt. As a result of the mental deterioration of the two women, they started mistreating him; nonetheless, as a relative observed, “I never heard him complain once.” Both the aunt and the mother in law died in 2009. Let us be reminded that Tommaso was the son in law of Elvira and that the aunt was his wife’s aunt; yet Tommaso treated them with a level of respect very few children would have shown them. Tommaso is highly respected and appreciated by those who know him. He is a humble, kind and respectful person. Because of his humility, kindness and the much good he has done for his mother in law and his wife’s aunt, we declare Tommaso a "Capistrano Angel."
